Stephen Keshi Stadium confirmed as venue for Nigeria's friendly with Egypt

Image
Nigeria's Football Federation (NFF) says the friendly against Egypt in March will take place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, southern Nigeria. The Egypt FA had confirmed on 20 December  that the Pharaohs would play the Super Eagles after Egypt's final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Niger. After finalising details with the Delta State Government, the NFF concluded that the fixture, set for 26 March, will take place at the ground named after the country's most successful coach, Stephen Keshi. It comes four days after Nigeria's Nations Cup game with visiting Seychelles at the same venue. Nigeria, the three-time African champions, last played in Asaba six weeks ago when they were held to a 0-0 friendly draw by the Cranes of Uganda. Africa's most decorated nation Egypt and Nigeria met in 2017 Nations Cup qualifying with The Pharaohs earning a 1-1 draw away from home before winning 1-0 in Alexandria to qualify for the finals ahead...

Ike Uche urges Chukwueze to continue his development at Villarreal

Image
Ikechukwu Uche has told Villarreal forward and fellow Nigerian Samuel Chukwueze to treat growing transfer speculation as a compliment and continue to develop at his former club. 19-year-old Chukwueze is  enjoying a breakthrough season,  scoring in the Spanish La Liga, Europa League and Spanish Cup. Chukwueze's form  has caught the attention of clubs across Europe, but Uche - who is highly revered at Villarreal - believes the teenager's interest will be best served by staying. "Chukwueze is doing well at Villarreal so it's only normal to have growing speculation about his future in the media, but he is in a good place," Uche told BBC Sport. "He should treat all this attention as a compliment and continue to grow because his impressive rise from the reserves to the first team is still fresh. "Villarreal is a good club, he is being taken care of and he's surrounded by quality players that will help him grow. "The people there are ded...

Women’s Africa Cup of Nations: Nigeria to defend title against South Africa

Image
Nigeria will defend their Women's Africa Cup of Nations title against South Africa on Saturday in the Ghanaian capital Accra. Their respective semi-final wins mean they also clinch places at next year's Women's World Cup in France - where Nigeria will make an eighth appearance and South Africa a first. The Super Falcons needed penalties to beat Cameroon after a goalless 120 minutes, while South Africa beat Mali 2-0 in the other semi-final. Cameroon and Mali must now lift themselves for Friday's third-place play-off that has a World Cup place on offer for the winners. In the first of the semi-finals, which was a repeat of the last two Nations Cup finals, Nigeria and Cameroon cancelled each other out over 120 minutes. The main drama of the match came in the post-match spot kicks with Nigeria scoring with all four of their efforts as Ngozi Ebere scored the decisive penalty. Cameroon were undone by two failed attempts as first star player Gaelle Enganamouit...

AFCON 2019: Three-time champions Nigeria are back

Image
Nigeria qualified for their first Africa Cup of Nations since winning the tournament in 2013 after drawing 1-1 with South Africa in Johannesburg. The draw guarantees the three-time African champions a place in Cameroon with a round of matches still to play. Despite conquering Africa in 2013, the Super Eagles surprisingly failed to qualify for the 2015 and 2017 finals. Nigeria led through an own goal before South Africa's Percy Tau produced a moment of magic to tee up Lebo Mothiba. The draw takes the Super Eagles to 10 points in Group E, one ahead of South Africa and three more than  Libya  who roared back into contention when thrashing the  Seychelles  8-1 in Victoria. Libya will now qualify for the Nations Cup if they beat Bafana Bafana in their final match next March. Nigeria, meanwhile, finish their campaign at home to the Seychelles who have conceded 22 goals in their five group games and prop up the table with one point. The Super Eagles' previo...

Image
Nigerian soccer fans hoping to watch the Super Eagles take on South Africa on November 17 will have to pay at least N1,500 for tickets to watch the Cup of Nations qualifier at FNB Stadium, Johannesburg. GERNOT ROHR: NIGERIA TO QUALIFY FOR 2019 AFCON IN SOUTH AFRICA

Image
Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr believes that his side can secure either a draw or win against South Africa to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Super Eagles are currently placed at the top of Group E standings with nine points and they will face Bafana Bafana on 17 November in Johannesburg, South Africa.  A draw or win for Nigeria in South Africa will be enough to secure the West African giants' place in the finals which will be hosted by Cameroon. “We want to qualify from this group if possible in the next game away to South Africa in Johannesburg which means we will do the same thing that we did for the qualification for the 2018 World Cup held in Russia that is to be qualified for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations before our last match is played against Seychelles in Nigeria,” brila.net quoted Rohr as saying.  “If we have a point in South Africa we have qualified even if Libya win in Seychelles and also win at home against South Africa, Libya will get ...

Samuel Kalu Enters Leicester’s Transfer Radar

Image
Girondins-Bordeaux of France winger, Samuel Kalu has surprisingly entered the transfer radar of Leicester City of England, with a hint that The Foxes are eager to get a direct replacement for his fellow-Nigerian forward, Ahmed Musa. Footballlive.ng learnt that, though Musa never found his range within two spells with the former English Premier League champions, The Foxes see the Super Eagles’ stand-in captain’s departure as a minus, hence their move to hook Kalu to fill the vacuum. Leicester still have two other Nigerian stars on their cards, with Wilfred Onyinye Ndidi enjoying regular playing time, while Kelechi Iheanacho is mostly used as an impact player, but there might yet be space for Kalu to fill down the flanks on either side. However, it will not be an open-shut bid to snatch the former KAA Gent attacker from the grip of Bordeaux, which he joined only this past summer, as several other clubs in England and AS Roma of Italy are also said to be in the race to hoo...

Image
Nigeria’s build-up to their African Nations Cup clash with Bafana Bafana later this month has been hit by accusations and denials over the make-up of coach Gernot Rohr’s squad for the fixture at FNB Stadium. There is usually much debate around the Super Eagles squad‚ but the continued absence of talisman and skipper John Mikel Obi has set tongues wagging‚ while another star man‚ Ogenyi Onazi‚ had been accused of faking injury. Rohr confirmed that he had called on veteran Mikel Obi for the fixture against Bafana‚ where the Super Eagles need just a point to book their place at the finals in Cameroon next June-July‚ but had been turned down by the player. Mikel Obi says he still has “fitness issues” by way of explanation‚ yet he has played the full 90 minutes‚ and even scored‚ in the last two games for his Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda‚ the latest on Sunday. Tianjin have just three games left in the season and are only above the relegation zone on goal-difference‚ ...
