Asamoah Gyan: Ghana captain left out of squad for Afcon qualifier against Kenya

Image
Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has been left out of coach Kwesi Appiah's 24-man squad to face Kenya in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Accra on 23 March. Gyan has struggled for playing time at his club Kayserispor in Turkey this season due to injuries. The 33-year-old striker, who played for 27 minutes in the 3-0 defeat away to Rizespor in the Super Lig on Sunday, was part of the Blacks Stars squad for their 2-0 win over Ethiopia in Addis Ababa in November 2018 but was an unused substitute. Coach Appiah has also recalled striker Kwesi Appiah, his namesake, after a four-year absence. The 28-year-old last played for Ghana in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final against Ivory Coast, a game the Black Stars lost 9-8 on penalties. Although he was recalled three years ago, the former Crystal Palace striker missed the match against Mozambique in Accra due to a knee injury. Appiah has scored four goals in 18 appearances for AFC Wimbledon in England's League One. Ther...

Hosts Ghana and Cameroon win on opening day of AWCON

Image
Host nation Ghana won the opening match of this year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations when beating Algeria 1-0 in Accra. The Black Queens took the lead in the twelfth minute as Gladys Amfobea pounced upon a defensive error to fire home a fierce shot. Algeria settled after the goal and began to push forward but were restricted to long-range efforts and set-pieces that never really threatened an equaliser. Ghana, who are seeking a first title after being runners-up three times, meet Mali in Group A on Wednesday, when Algeria face Cameroon. The Cameroonians  are four-time losing finalists but started their campaign with a come-from-behind  2-1  win against  Mali. Malii took the lead 10 minutes after the break when Aissata Traore fired home on her first senior start before Cameroon, who finished runners-up when hosting in 2016, hit back with two goals in two minutes. The first came as Falon Meffometou scored amidst a melee before Nchout Ajara, who boasts 15...

James Kwesi Appiah is hoping to book a ticket for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations when his side meets Ethiopia, November 18 fixture in Addis Ababa.  Ghana are third in Group F with two more matches to end the series, the Black Stars will be hoping to bounce from defeat against Kenya in Nairobi. Three points will all but confirm the four-time African champions as one of the two qualifying teams from the group, ahead of the final round of games in March next year. A scheduled doubleheader against Sierra Leone last month was cancelled at the last hour after Fifa indefinitely banned the Leone Stars' football association on ground of "governmental interference". "We have kept on monitoring our players and I believe that now, the concentration [is] on how best we can qualify as soon as possible," Appiah told  Daily Graphic . "We have got two games ahead of us. We just need to get a win in Ethiopia and then we all can relax. “We have had no problem...

I deserve the chance to represent Ghana next month - Enugu Rangers shot-stopper Nana Bonsu

Image
Ghana and Enugu Rangers goalkeeper Nana Bonsu has revealed he deserves a national team call-up ahead of the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Ethiopia.   Bonsu, 29, guided the Rangers to win the Aiteo Cup final against Kano Pillars last weekend after saving two penalties during the shootout. "I've been doing my best and I think I deserve this chance to represent Ghana next month," the shot-stopper told Goal. "There are equally good goalkeepers around but since the call-up is solely based on form, I believe the coaching staff must give me the opportunity. At least, everyone in Nigeria is aware of my heroics and I need to be rewarded. "With Ghana in a dire need of three points against Ethiopia to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, I think my presence will help. Kwesi Appiah must give me a chance. This is my time and I promise to do my best when given the opportunity," he added. Currently, Ghana is 3rd in Group F of ...
