Nigeria: Afcon Qualifier Squad - Mikel's Name Missing Again

Image
Super Eagles Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr has again left out captain Mikel John Obi from next month's crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against South Africa after he named a 23-man squad for the encounter. China-based Mikel Obi, who made his debut for the country in 2005, has not played for the team since the World Cup in Russia in June, where he led as captain. Officials have said the former Chelsea star was previously left out of the squad to allow him time to recover from niggling injuries. But he has since fully recovered and is now playing regularly for his Chinese club, Tianjin Teda. In the meantime, Rohr has recalled Sporting Charleroi striker Victor Osimhen and midfielder Mikel Agu, who is based in Portugal. Villarreal young forward Samuel Chukwueze has been handed his first call-up. Nigeria play South Africa in Johannesburg on Nov. 17 in a crucial qualifying encounter. The country's national team top Group E with nine points from fo

Tanzania coach Emmanuel Amuneke admits leading the Taifa Stars is a challenge but his team is ready to build. The former Nigeria international is now preparing to face Cape Verde in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in October. The 1994 Caf African Footballer of the Year is confident he has the strategy to lead Tanzania to a first Nations Cup finals since 1980. "Being the head coach of the Tanzania senior team is a challenging job," he told BBC Sport. "Hopefully, we do our best and I believe that hard work is a non-negotiable term in whatever we do in life. You just have to do what you know best." The Taifa Stars are Amuneke's first role as coach of a senior national team and he began with a goalless draw in neighbouring Uganda in a 2019 Nations Cup qualifier. "We achieved our objective. We were clear with what we want to do and we worked towards it. "I am proud of the players - I had only spent 10 days with the team and we could see th

The former Mamelodi Sundowns sensation is South Africa's leading scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with two goals. Asked which South Africa players he'll warn his team about, Rohr told  Kick Off Magazine  : ''They are all good, and the whole team plays at a high level. They scored brilliant goals against Seychelles at home. ''I particularly like Percy Tau, who has impressed me, but I know that Keagan Dolly from Montpellier is injured.''
